Self Reliance Part II

Thank you, Gary Ryan Blair,…
You've no doubt heard Albert Einstein's definition of insanity...
Doing the same things over and over but expecting different results.
With no malice intended, apparently, we've got a lot of insane people out there.
But the truth is...nothing changes in your life if nothing changes in your life.
Change. Rapid. Volatile. Head spinning and relentless change has become the new normal…and by the looks of it, we can count on a series of repeat performances moving forward.
So as mom, dad, student, leader or business owner…what can you do to bring a sense of peace, stability and comfort to an environment of hostility, instability and fear?
How can you confidently plan for the future when the future is filled with so much uncertainty and unpredictability?
I’ve been thinking about this question a lot lately.
Because the future is so uncertain…what do I know that really works, what do I know with certainty is not ever going to change?
Here are Five Action Steps to build Self-reliance.
Do What Works.
If it’s not right don’t do it, if it’s not true don’t say it. — Marcus Aurelius
1. Mental Toughness
We are in the midst of the largest psychological operation (PSYOP) in the history of mankind.
Which means…we are all being played. We are all pawns in someone else’s shell game.
That’s why becoming mentally tough is mandatory, not optional.
Exercising dominance and control over your mind means that you have the type of mindset and spirit that is incapable of being overcome, subdued, or vanquished.
In short, it means that you are mentally as tough as nails…unconquerable.
2. Physical Exercise
Without excellent physical health, enjoyment of life is never fully complete.
Without excellent physical health you cannot fully maximize your earnings.
Without excellent physical health you compromise your physical activities.
Without excellent physical health your life becomes more demanding and difficult.
However, with excellent physical health…you have the ability to be fully engaged and can pursue your goals with the confidence that you will be able to accomplish them.
Foremost attention should, therefore, be given towards maximizing your health and energy.
3. Sleep and Nutrition
Diet, exercise, and sleep are three pillars of a healthy life.
While improving just one of these lifestyle factors can help you lead a longer, more joyful life…improving all three is the best way to improve both physical and mental health.
Sleep offers your body and brain time to restore and recover…and in my experience 7 to 9 hours of sleep is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
4. Sense of Purpose
Because of the work I do, I know intimately the importance of having a sense of meaning, purpose, challenge and direction.
Man’s Search for Meaning written by Viktor Frankl has been a constant reminder of those truths.
I highly recommend reading it because it provides a vivid account of his experience as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp.
There are many parallels in this book with what we are experiencing in our own lives today.
The book focuses on love, hope, purpose, responsibility, inner freedom, and the beauty to be found in both nature and art as means that help one endure and overcome harrowing experiences.
5. Courage
I know with absolute certainty that in the absence of my ability to be courageous…to not stand up and defend principles…to refrain from doing the right thing at the right time…then nothing of significance will ever come to be in my life.
Moral courage is best defined by firmly and confidently facing mental challenges, crises of conscience, and ethical dilemmas that could harm one’s reputation, emotional well-being, self-esteem and other intrinsic characteristics.
It is doing the right thing, even if it’s unpopular without flinching orretreating. It’s refusing to idly stand by while others engage in unethical behavior.
Moral courage is concerned with the defense of the intangible. It is not property but principles, not valuables but virtues that moral courage rises to defend.
Acts of moral courage carry with them the risks of humiliation, ridicule, contempt, unemployment, and loss of social standing.
The morally courageous person is often going against the grain, acting contrary to the accepted norm.
For many, the rule is in order to get along you go along. But for the morally courageous person, that philosophy is unacceptable.
There’s risk associated with moral courage but that’s exactly the point…if you don’t risk defending your principles, you are guaranteed to lose them.
And that’s a risk not worth taking.
There you go.
Start with those five…and before you put your head down for a good night’s sleep, I encourage you to add a few things of your own.
Your future lies ahead of you…which means the best is yet to come!
Before you go…
